What is the Japanese-style Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)?
The Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a highly accurate, non-invasive screening tool used to detect hidden (occult) blood in the stool. At NURA, we utilize a specialized Japanese-style FIT as a primary screening method for colon cancer and other lower gastrointestinal conditions.
Why is the FIT included in my NURA health screening?
Colorectal cancer often begins as non-cancerous polyps that may bleed slightly, long before any visible symptoms appear. The FIT is designed to detect these microscopic traces of blood, allowing for early intervention. It is a vital component of our comprehensive 120-minute preventive screening packages for both men and women.
How is the FIT different from older stool tests?
Unlike traditional fecal occult blood tests, the FIT specifically uses antibodies to target human hemoglobin from the lower digestive tract. This makes it significantly more accurate and reduces the chances of false-positive results caused by the foods you eat or the medications you take.
Do I need to fast or change my diet before the test?
No. One of the biggest advantages of the FIT is its convenience. You do not need to fast, restrict your diet, or stop taking your routine medications prior to collecting the sample.
What does a “negative” result mean?
A negative result means that no hidden blood was detected in your stool sample. While this is an excellent indicator of colon health, we recommend continuing with your routine preventive screenings at NURA to monitor for any future changes.
What does a “positive” result mean? Does it mean I have cancer?
A positive result simply means that traces of blood were found in your stool—it does not automatically mean you have cancer.
