6 Healthy Habits to Follow Once You Turn 30

Turning 30 is an important milestone, and it can also be a good time to take a closer look at your health. With changing work schedules, increased responsibilities and often less time for yourself, healthy habits can easily take a back seat. However, the choices you make during this decade can play an important role in supporting your health and well-being in the years ahead.

Maintaining good health does not mean following a restrictive diet or spending hours at the gym. It is about building sustainable habits around nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management and preventive healthcare. According to the World Health Organization, a healthy diet and regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of several non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

Your thirties are therefore a good time to move from simply reacting to health concerns to taking a more proactive approach. Here are some healthy habits worth incorporating into your everyday routine.

As you get older, paying attention to the quality of your diet becomes increasingly important. Rather than following short-term diets or eliminating entire food groups, focus on eating a varied and balanced diet.

Include plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts, seeds and good sources of protein. WHO recommends that people over the age of 10 consume at least 400 grams, or approximately five portions, of fruit and vegetables each day. It also recommends limiting free sugars and keeping salt intake below 5 grams per day.

You do not need to give up your favourite foods either. The trick is moderation. Enjoy the dessert, but perhaps not every night. Choose water more often than sugary drinks. Add a vegetable to your lunch and dinner. Small upgrades tend to be much easier to maintain than extreme diets.

Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to support both physical and mental well-being. It can help maintain a healthy weight, strengthen muscles and bones, improve cardiovascular health, and support better mood and sleep.

It is recommended that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days a week. You do not necessarily need a gym membership to meet these recommendations. Brisk walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, dancing, or playing a sport can all contribute to an active lifestyle. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your week.

Sleep is an essential part of maintaining good health, yet it is often one of the first things to be compromised when life gets busy. Adults between 18 and 60 are generally recommended to get at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Try to maintain a consistent sleep and wake schedule, including on weekends. Limiting screen exposure before bedtime, avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime, and creating a comfortable, quiet sleeping environment can also help improve sleep quality. Instead of thinking of sleep as time taken away from your day, consider it an important part of your daily health routine.

Your thirties can bring significant professional and personal responsibilities. With work often extending beyond office hours, maintaining a healthy separation between work and personal time becomes important.

Where possible, establish clear boundaries around your working hours. Take regular breaks during the day, step away from your desk during meals and make time for activities outside of work. Spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies or simply having some uninterrupted downtime can all contribute to overall well-being.

A healthy lifestyle habit is not about dividing your time perfectly. It is about ensuring that work does not consistently come at the expense of rest, relationships and personal well-being.

Some level of stress is a normal part of everyday life. However, prolonged or unmanaged stress can affect both mental and physical well-being.

Make time for activities that help you relax and recharge. This could include walking, exercising, reading, listening to music, meditation, yoga or spending time with people you enjoy. Strategies such as physical activity, relaxation techniques, meditation and connecting with supportive people have been proven as efficient ways to manage stress. The goal is not to eliminate stress completely, but to develop healthy ways of responding to it.

Good health is not only about the habits you practise every day. Preventive healthcare also plays an important role.

Regular health check-ups can help monitor important indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, while appropriate screenings can help detect certain health conditions at an early stage. Screening requirements vary depending on factors such as age, sex, family history and individual risk. Speak to your healthcare provider about which check-ups and screenings are appropriate for you, particularly if you have a family history of certain conditions.

Your thirties are an opportunity to establish a strong foundation for the years ahead. You do not need to make dramatic changes or follow an overly complicated routine. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, effective stress management, healthy work-life boundaries and preventive healthcare can go a long way towards supporting your overall well-being.

The most important thing is consistency. Start with a few changes that feel realistic, build on them over time and make your health a regular part of your priorities. After all, taking care of your health today is one of the best ways to support a healthier tomorrow.
